Nearly every American house of a certain vintage had one: a shallow wooden tray with dozens of mismatched compartments, hung on a wall and filled with thimbles, pewter animals, or nothing at all. It is a real piece of industrial equipment, and the mismatched compartments are not a design choice. They are a map of how often you use each letter.
The short version
- It is a type case, a letterpress tray that slid out of a cabinet. The famous one is the California job case, with 89 compartments — but other lays exist, so count before you name it.
- The compartments are sized by letter frequency. The lowercase e box is the biggest; j, k, q, x and z get the smallest. That asymmetry is the fastest authentication test there is.
- Capitals run alphabetically except J and U, which sit out of sequence at the end. A reproduction has no reason to know that, and none of them do.
- A full California case is about 32 by 16⅝ inches and very shallow. If it is deeper than about an inch and a half, it is not a type case.
- New reproductions cost the same as real ones. Genuine cases ask roughly $85 to $180; new lookalike shelves ask $30 to $250. The bands overlap almost completely, which is the whole problem.
- The same drawer is worth five to ten times more as decor than as printing equipment. Sold as a wall shelf: $85 to $180. Sold in a cabinet of fifty to a working printer: $10 to $20 apiece.

What a printer's tray actually is
Before a page could be printed, somebody had to build it out of metal letters, one at a time, backwards. The letters lived in a shallow wooden tray that slid out of a cabinet like a drawer, and the compositor stood at a sloped rack with the tray in front of him, picking characters out of their compartments and dropping them into a handheld composing stick.
Originally there were two trays per typeface. Capitals went in one, small letters in the other, and the capitals tray sat above the other on the rack. That is not an anecdote about typography — it is the reason the words exist. Uppercase and lowercase are furniture positions. The capitals were in the upper case.
Somewhere in the middle of the nineteenth century American printers got tired of reaching across two trays to set a single line, and consolidated. The result put capitals, small letters, figures, punctuation and spacing material into one tray, and it took over the country so thoroughly that by the time anybody wrote down where it came from, nobody could quite remember.
The best research on the question was done by Lewis A. Pryor, who worked through the St. Bride Printing Library, the Newberry Library and the Kemble Collections and could get no closer than this: a journeyman printer named Octavius Dearing introduced it while working for Ellis Read's San Francisco type foundry, Dearing never claimed anyone there invented it, and the name stuck because the Pacific Coast is where the rest of the trade first saw it. J. L. Ringwalt had recorded the layout in his American Encyclopaedia of Printing by 1871. The first printed illustration of one turns up in 1884.
Why they all came off the wall at once
Hand-set type was already a specialty craft by the 1940s — machine composition had taken body text decades earlier — and when commercial printing shifted decisively from letterpress to offset lithography through the 1960s and 1970s, the job cases became worthless overnight, in enormous numbers. A closing print shop had a cabinet with forty-eight of them in it. That is the entire origin of the trend: not a decorator inventing something, but a country's worth of small print shops emptying their cabinets at the same moment that macrame and dark wood paneling were in style.
Why the compartments are all different
This is the part worth knowing, because it turns a decorative object into a readable one.
A California job case has 89 compartments, and they are deliberately, wildly unequal. A compositor picking letters by hand thousands of times a day is running an optimization problem, and the case is the solution: the letters you reach for most sit closest to your hand, in the biggest boxes, because you need the most of them.
So the high-frequency letters — t, n, e, i, o, r — are clustered in a rough circle directly in front of where the compositor stood. The lowercase e box is the largest in the case, because e is the most common letter in English. The boxes for j, k, q, x and z are the smallest, tucked at the edges. Spacing material — em quads down to five-em spaces — gets its own dedicated compartments, because a line of type is mostly space.
The capitals are the strangest and best part. They run in a straightforward alphabetical block, except that J and U sit out of sequence, dropped in at the end after the rest. The reason is that J and U were not separate letters in the alphabet the earliest English-speaking printers worked with; when they were eventually recognized, there was nowhere to put them but the empty boxes at the back. The layout of a tray on a wall in Michigan preserves a spelling reform that predates the United States.
The one-second test
Hold the tray at arm's length and look only at the shapes. A genuine type case reads as visually chaotic — a regular block of equal boxes at one end for the capitals, then a sprawl of big boxes, tiny boxes and long narrow slots across the rest, with no repeating rhythm. A reproduction reads as tidy all the way across: a grid, or a grid with a couple of sizes alternating pleasantly. Tidiness is the tell. The real thing was laid out by a trade optimizing for speed, and speed is not symmetrical.
How Hamilton came to make most of them
If your tray is stamped with a name, the name is probably Hamilton, and the story behind it is a good one.
In 1878 a newspaper editor in Two Rivers, Wisconsin asked a young man named James Edward Hamilton to cut some large letters for a poster. Hamilton did it on a foot-powered scroll saw. He sent samples to printers around the area, orders came back, and in 1880 he founded the J. E. Hamilton Holly Wood Type Company. It became Hamilton & Katz in 1881 when he took on a partner, and was incorporated as the Hamilton Manufacturing Company on the first day of 1889.
His advantage was blunt and effective: he could deliver at roughly half the price and half the time of the established eastern makers. By 1891 he had two hundred employees and half a million dollars of annual business. Within twenty years of founding, Hamilton was the largest manufacturer of wood type in the United States — and, because printers buying type also needed somewhere to keep it, the largest maker of the cases and cabinets that held it.
Then he bought the competition. In 1909 Hamilton acquired the Tubbs Manufacturing Company in Michigan, described in the company's own history as the last of his major competitors. That is the short version of why an unsigned wooden tray in a Midwestern basement is statistically likely to have come from Two Rivers, Wisconsin.
Hamilton kept diversifying — print shop furniture, then dental and medical office cabinetry, drafting tables, even an early gas clothes dryer — and shifted toward steel around 1917. The company still exists, as a maker of laboratory furniture. The wood type and the job cases are the part of it that ended up on everyone's wall.
How to tell a real case from a shelf
Six checks, in the order they are quickest to perform.
- Look at the compartment shapes first. Unequal and unrhythmic means real. A neat grid all the way across means new. This settles perhaps four out of five cases before you touch anything.
- Find the hardware. This is the single most decisive check, and it is visible in almost every listing photograph. A real case was a drawer, so it has a pull: a pressed or cast metal handle riveted to the front edge, very often through a metal capping strip that runs the full width of the case. That strip protected the front from decades of being yanked open. No reproduction has one, because a shelf is never pulled.
- Measure the depth. A California job case is very shallow. The front wall runs about 1⁷⁄₁₆ inches, the other three sides and the internal braces about 1⅛, and the thin dividers only about ¹⁵⁄₁₆ of an inch. A type-high letter is not tall, and the tray never needed to be. Anything two or three inches deep was built to hold knickknacks, not type.
- Check the overall size. A full California case measures roughly 32³⁄₁₆ by 16⅝ inches. Half cases, cap cases and specialty lays exist at other sizes, but that 32-by-16 footprint is the one everybody pictures.
- Look at the bottom. A genuine case has a thin bottom — about an eighth of an inch of pressboard or ply — rabbeted into the frame from the inside, so it reads as part of the box. The dividers sit in cut notches along the cross-braces, and you can usually see the notching. A thicker panel nailed or screwed flat onto the back face is the mark of something built to hang.
- Read the pull, then the front edge. Print shops labeled their cases with the typeface name and size. Sometimes that is stenciled on the front; very often the metal pull is itself a label holder, with a slot for a card naming what lived inside. Look into the channel of the handle before you assume it is empty — a surviving card is the most interesting thing about a given case, and, oddly, the market pays nothing extra for it.
What the trade name does and does not tell you
A Hamilton stamp authenticates a case. It does not make it scarce, and the market knows this: Hamilton-marked cases currently ask $85, $105, $110, $160 and $179, while unmarked ones ask $115, $124, $125, $135 and $170. The single most expensive intact case we found is unmarked, and the cheapest is a Hamilton. Hamilton made so many that the mark is close to a default. Buy the condition and the size, not the name.
The look-alikes, and the brand-new ones
Four things get sold as printer's trays. Only one of them is one.

The reproduction problem here is unusual, and worth stating plainly: the new ones are not cheap knockoffs undercutting the originals. They cost the same. That is a different market failure from the one collectors are used to, and it caps what a genuine case can ever bring — the same dynamic that reset the market for Lenox Spice Village when the houses came back into production.
What printer's trays sell for now
Two honest caveats before the numbers. These are dealer and seller asking prices checked in September 2026, not completed sales — the auction houses that handle this material keep their realized prices behind a login, and we did not find a public set. And the popular marketplace listings are dynamic, so treat the figures as a band rather than a price list.

Read the last two rows against the first ten. The reproduction band and the genuine band are the same band. A new tray manufactured this year sits at $112; a real one from a closed print shop sits between $85 and $179. There is no premium for being seventy years old, because the buyer is furnishing a wall and the wall cannot tell.
The same object, priced twice
Here is the finding worth carrying out of this guide. Search for a printer's tray wall shelf and you are in the home decor market, competing with new production, and a case brings $85 to $180. Search for a California job case or a letterpress type case and you are in the printing-supply market, where cases are ancillary equipment sold by the cabinet: a 48-drawer oak Hamilton cabinet with fifty-odd cases in it asks somewhere between $900 and $3,400, and letterpress people will tell you a good wooden cabinet with a full set of cases goes for under a thousand all the time.
That works out to roughly $10 to $20 a case as equipment, against $85 to $180 as decor — a five to tenfold difference for the identical drawer, decided entirely by which words the listing uses. It is the same mechanism that turned a $19.99 catalog bird into a decorator piece in our guide to vintage brass cranes: the object did not change, the shelf it was being sold onto did.
Before you buy one
- Check for lead residue and wash your hands. These held metal type, and that type was a lead alloy. Grey powdery residue in the corners is not dust. Vacuum rather than blow it out, and do not let a case that has not been cleaned become a jewelry tray.
- Dividers are the fragile part. They are thin stock set into shallow slots, and they snap. A case with six broken dividers is a project, not a bargain, and replacements have to be cut to fit.
- Woodworm and dry rot. Print shops were dry, but basements and barns were not. Look along the underside of the frame for pinholes.
- Shipping will cost more than you expect. Thirty-two inches of fragile, low-density wood is an awkward, expensive parcel, and a corner crush breaks dividers you cannot see until it arrives. Our notes on packing awkward pieces apply directly.
- Buy it in person if you can. This is a category where the freight is a large fraction of the price, which means local estate sales and auctions are genuinely where the value is.
The same drawer lists under at least five names — printer's tray, type case, job case, letterpress drawer, and typesetter's tray — and the decor names carry a five to tenfold premium over the trade names. Most decorative objects are decorative on purpose. This one is an accident: a piece of shop equipment that turned out, once it was empty and turned on its side, to be a rather beautiful grid — and that got adopted by a generation of Americans who mostly had no idea what they were hanging.
What makes it worth more than its $110 is that it is legible. The big box near the middle held the e because English is full of e. The little boxes at the edge held the z and the q because it is not. The capitals go in order until they reach J and U, which arrived in the alphabet late and got the leftover corners. A person who set type for forty years could read that tray the way you read a keyboard, without looking, and the tray on the wall still holds the shape of that skill.
It is also the rare antique that has to justify itself against a brand-new version at the same price. Ours is the one with the ink in the corners, the handle worn smooth, and a card still in the pull that says what typeface used to live there. That is the entire argument, and it is a good one — but only if the buyer knows what they are looking at. Which is, more or less, what this guide is for.
